Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to complete training and pass an exam?
Yes, in principle, training and an exam are mandatory.
Exception: drones under 250 g (C0). However, the FOCA still recommends voluntary training in these cases.
Is my certificate valid abroad?
Yes. Certificates issued via the dLIS/UASgate portal are valid in Switzerland and all EU member states.
I received my certificate before the EU regulations came into effect – is it still valid?
Yes, if you obtained it through the dLIS/UASgate portal.
You can download an updated version with the EU logo in your profile.
Certificates from third-party providers (e.g. voluntary courses) are not recognized.
Can companies or associations obtain a certificate?

No. Only natural persons can obtain a certificate. Companies receive only a UAS operator number; the pilots themselves must hold their own certificate.

I have an EU certificate – can I fly in Switzerland?
Yes. EU certificates are valid in Switzerland.
Can I upload my EU certificate to dLIS?
No. That is not necessary. EU certificates are automatically valid in Switzerland.
Specific category: Authorizations & requirements

An authorization is always required for the specific category. There are three procedures:

  • EU-STS /  Standard scenarios
  • PDRA / Predefined Risk Assessment
  • SORA / Specific Operations Risk Assessment
What skills do I need for specific category operations?

  • EU-STSA / 1/A3 certificate + EU-STS theory & practical training
  • PDRA / Skills depending on the operational scenario
  • SORA / Skills depending on the risk assessment
Where can I get help with the SORA risk assessment?
Contact specialized consulting companies in Switzerland. FOCA does not maintain an official list and does not provide recommendations.
Who authorizes my drone operation?
Always the aviation authority of the country where you are registered.
I want to fly abroad – who authorizes that?

  • You must first obtain authorization in your registration country (e.g. Switzerland).
  • Then you must notify the aviation authority of the destination country about your flight (including risk mitigation measures, etc.).
  • The authority of the destination country decides whether the flight is approved.
Am I allowed to fly over crowds of people?

No, it is prohibited in the open category. You may only fly over crowds with a SORA authorization.

Definition: crowd = dense groups of people where individuals cannot move freely (e.g. concert, festival)
