Frequently Asked Questions

Is flying with FPV (First Person View) allowed?

Yes, under certain conditions. Flights using video goggles (FPV) are only allowed if:

  • A visual observer is standing directly next to the pilot
  • This person must keep the drone in constant sight (VLOS)
  • There must be active communication about potential hazards
  • Responsibility remains with the pilot

Note: Without visual contact (no observer), a SORA authorization from FOCA is required – this also applies to FPV races.

Can I film or take photos at events (e.g. weddings, holiday camps)?

Yes, but with restrictions:

  • Do not fly over gatherings of people
  • Observe minimum distances depending on the category (A1, A2, A3)
  • The overflight of persons usually falls within the specific category.
Are survey flights allowed?
Yes. Survey flights with drones are generally permitted, as long as they comply with the rules of the open category – particularly regarding weight, distance to people, and visual line of sight.
Can I fly in the city?

Only under certain conditions:

  • Drones over 900 g: FOCA authorization required
  • Even with lighter drones, no person may be overflown
  • In densely populated areas, this is often not realistically feasible
Is the delivery of goods by drone allowed?

Yes, but only with authorization.

  • Delivery drones usually fly beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS)
  • Often over cities → gatherings of people & complex environments
  • SORA authorization is strictly required
Will drones for passenger transport (air taxis) be available soon?

Not yet authorized. Passenger transport using drones is very complex and requires comprehensive certifications and approvals. The legal framework is still under development.

What rules apply to indoor flights?

  • There are no specific drone rules
  • Indoor spaces are not considered airspace
  • House rules and general safety regulations apply
  • Caution is always advised
Can I fly at night?

Yes, with additional safety precautions:

  • The drone must have a green flashing light
  • Visual line of sight (VLOS) is also mandatory at night
  • In poor visibility, the maximum flight altitude may need to be reduced

Where can I fly everywhere?

The Federal Office of Civil Aviation will show you the zones with restrictions for model aircraft and drones and the official aeronautical map of Switzerland.
