Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to register as a drone operator?

Yes, with a few exceptions.
You must register unless your drone:

  • weighs less than 250 g, and
  • has no camera, microphone, or similar data-capturing sensors.
How much does the registration cost?

Registration with FOCA via the dLIS portal costs:

  • CHF 10.– for private individuals and companies.
What is the difference between a UAS operator number and a remote pilot ID?

  • UAS Operator Number: Comparable to a license plate – must be attached to the drone.
  • Remote Pilot ID: Comparable to a driver's license – issued after passing training.
How do I attach the UAS operator number to my drone?

  • Attach it visibly on the drone.
  • The last 3 characters (xyz) are confidential and must not be attached.
  • waterproof marker (block letters)
  • label or plate
  • engraving
Why is there a distinction between natural and legal persons?

  • Natural person: Receives UAS operator number + remote pilot ID.
  • Legal person (e.g. company, association): Only receives a UAS operator number.

The remote pilot ID must be obtained by a natural person who operates the drone.

I fly for a company – how does registration work?

  • The company registers as an operator in the dLIS portal.
  • You as a pilot must additionally register as a natural person to take the exams.
My drone has no class marking – can I still fly it?
Yes, but only in the transitional category – and only if all rules (e.g. training, minimum distance from people) are followed.

I fly privately and commercially – do I need to register twice?

Yes.

  • Once as a private individual
  • Additionally for commercial use (company = separate registration)

If you use the same drone, you can choose which operator number is attached – important for liability in case of an incident.

Is Swiss registration valid abroad?
Yes. Swiss registration is valid in the EU as long as no special flight authorization is required.
I was registered in an EU country but now live in Switzerland – what should I do?

  • Register in the Swiss dLIS portal.
  • Delete your EU registration (manually or by contacting the aviation authority).

Note: Some countries link registration and training – only delete your EU registration if you're sure you won’t lose your remote pilot certificate.

I am on holiday in Switzerland – do I need to register?

  • EU citizens: No, if you are already registered in your EU country.
  • Non-EU citizens: Yes, if you are not yet registered anywhere, you must register in Switzerland.
Is there a central register for drones?
No. There is no aircraft register for drones. Only operators are registered – not the drones themselves.
Do I have to register my drone?
No. You must register as an operator – and visibly attach your UAS operator number to each drone.
